What is EMV?
EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa, a global standard for inter-operation of integrated circuit cards (IC cards or "chip cards") and IC card capable point of sale (POS) terminals and automated teller machines (ATMs), for authenticating credit and debit card transactions. There are two major benefits to moving to smart-card-based credit card payment systems: improved security (with associated fraud reduction), and the possibility for finer control of "offline" credit-card transaction approvals.
Visa and MasterCard have signaled some of their intentions, though none of the card associations have come out with full guidelines. However, Visa has announced a plan that includes a liability shift to acquirers. Once a sufficient number of financial institutions begin issuing smart cards en masse, merchants need to decide whether to process the cards using EMV technology or to accept financial liability for fraud losses that they will ultimately be responsible for.
Beginning in October 2015, merchants will need to be able to process chip cards or face the possibility of assuming all liability for fraudulent credit card use.

Shifting the payment process to a hardened Verifone device removes the POS applications from the scope of PCI and PA-DSS compliance requirements. Card data will no longer travel across your theatre network because payments are physically separate from your transactions. You will be able to eliminate the cumbersome auditing and documentation procedures required by your merchant processor.
Sure, you will have to buy or lease a Verifone device for each terminal but it will handle any payment card, keychain, or smartphone with a chip you swipe, insert, or wave at it. This is the future of payment processing that has been a long time coming for the United States and we support it now.
